  Giant Snakehead Fishing Package

The Giant Snakehead, Channa micropeltes, is the largest in the family Channidae, growing to 130 cm in length and a weight up to 20kg (44 pounds). The Giant Snakehead is native to Thailand and it is widely distributed from India to Vietnam. In Malaysia and Indonesia they are called Toman, the common Thai name is Pla Shadow. Occurs in lowland river and swamp, usually associated with deep water bodies like the big hydro power reservoirs of South-East Asia. Also found in large streams and canals, with standing or slowly flowing water. Feeds mainly on fish but also takes some crustaceans and frogs. It spawns in small streams with dense vegetation. The Giant snakehead builds a nest to lay their eggs in, and will attack anyone who comes too close.

The Giant Snakehead is a savage predator, and the Asian equivalent to a pike or a bass. They are aggressive fish that will take Surface lures, deep diving wobblers, spoons and even flies with ferocity! It will dive straight for the nearest snag or cover, their strong hard mouths and constant head shaking mean that these fish are the ultimate challenge for serious predator anglers. Most Snakeheads we catch in Cheow Lan lake average between two and seven kilograms, catching a trophy size Giant Snakehead is a memorable achievement.

To target the hard fighting Giant Snakehead in Thailand’s big reservoirs is challenging, and results can depend greatly on your own casting ability. Accuracy is very important as the Giant Snakehead invariably likes to habitat snaggy areas such as over-hanging vegetation, weedy areas, and sunken logs and often stays very close to the bank. They are very territorial and will often strike at anything that goes near them. It likes to stay behind snags from where it can ambush its prey. The Giant Snakehead is highly territorial. It can live in heavily vegetated waters where oxygen is scarce, since they breathe oxygen from the air using their labyrinth organ. The equipment we use is top brand and balanced for the lures we use. It does not take long to get used to, and most anglers soon find it easy to cast with it accurately. The Giant Snakehead feed normally best during the early morning hours and in the evening. During the rainy season (June to November) the fishing can be good all day long during heavy rains or overcast weather. The current IGFA world record for Giant Snakehead is 10.00 kg and was caught by Christopher S. G. Tan Aug. 23, 2005, in Dengkil, Malaysia. Giant Snakehead over 15 kg has been caught in the big reservoirs in Thailand.

Giant snakeheads protect their fry after the spawning and the parents are normally swimming very close to the fry during the first months of their life. The fry can be spotted when they come up taking air on the surface. Casting surface poppers or wobblers close to the school of fry will often result in a ferocious strike from one or both of the parents guarding their fry. We release all fish during this period as the fry will not survive without their guarding parents; the Hampala Barb will finish them off in no time without parental protection.
